Bishop Danylo Bohdan, bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese of St. Josaphat in Parma, visited Apopka in 2021. Oleg Sotnik and Natalia Schurovska asked for his help in planting a church in the St. Augustine area. Together with Father Roman Kuzminsky, parish priest of the Protectress of the St. Mary, they applied to the diocese of St. Augustine for permission for local celebrations for the Ukrainian Catholic community. St. Augustine Bishop Felipe Esteves granted their request and provided San Sebastian Catholic Church as a place of worship in collaboration with Father John Gillespie, pastor of San Sebastian. Father Kuzminsky agreed to travel to St. Augustine about twice a month to celebrate the Ukrainian Mass. The first Mass was held on February 5, 2022. What started as a community of 30 people began to grow to nearly 100 members. Having a physical place in the region to worship meant many members of the community. Although most of them live in St. Augustine, many have come from Jacksonville, Palm Coast and other cities. During the visit on March 12, 2022, Bishop Danylo officially founded the parish of the Mission of the Encounter of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in St. Augustine. Almost 150 people gathered in the parish of San Sebastian to hear their bishop pray with them and bless their mission.
